Sunil has been writing poetry since 1974 in Sinhala and has had them published in journals and newspapers and broadcast over Sri Lankan national radio.

Now Sunil also writes poetry in English.

In 1998 Sunil read some of his poetry at the 11th Commonwealth Triennial Conference on Literature and Language, held in Kuala Lumpar along with distinguished poets from Commonwealth countries.
